I have been quite succesful at growing tomatoes in the past and going out first thing in the morning to get a handful of the small, succulent, and very red juicy fruits was too much to miss out on.......so seeing this bare empty patch urged me on to go and get some plants.
We do have plenty of these flowers so the kitchen always has a bunch in a vase on the worktop.
Mint runs riot too, I managed to get 4 plants from the farmshop when we moved, I wanted something to remind me of the countryside and being a mint lover they very kindly let me pick my own from their patch. I did try to contain it in this planter but knowing how mint just loves to run riot , it escaped and now we find it everywhere.
Armed with the essentials we got planting......
I have never grown cucumbers before and not holding out much hope on my first attempt, for a start we are not in the bush, and the picture suggests that I will get plenty of the straight beasts. This I have got to see, as the ones I buy in the shops are always bent, unless you buy Lebonese cucumbers, which in my humble opinion are not a patch on the European type.
Then there are these little things, the picture looks great, so being big headed after my last attempt I bought them, only to read the instructions of growing in a pot......Noooooooooooo
So having also bought tumbler tomatoes (the name should have given that one away) which also needed a pot.....b*g*er......LESSON HERE IS TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU BUY, Oh yes, and always take your reading glasses too, we went for a gamble and planted one in the ground and the other in a bucket.
I can hear all you purists out there, moaning a bucket, (joke by the way) almost 'tching' and shaking of the head, but hey a gamble is what it is and by jolly I am going to care for that tomato plant (and hopefully it will not go in the compost bin all rotten and mouldy) and next time I promise I will read the instructions first. If I see any flowers I will put it in a Blog and if I get any tomatoes you will be the first to see them........honestly.

I think the idea of growing in a pot (not growing pot, which is very different!!)is to limit root growth thereby sending all the goodness to the top of the plant giving you lots of yummy tomatoes.
You can grow cucumbers up a trellis saving you ground space then you won't have cucumber plants blocking the light from all your windows......they REALLY spread.
P.S. That shovel looks very shiny, spiffy and new!!

Personally, I find instructions to be extremely over rated!
Love (a manly handshake for John)
