The Hatton Lock Flight, known by boaters as `The Stairway to Heaven` has 21 locks and lifts the canal 144ft/45metres in 2miles/4kms. We thought it was time to venture out and blow away those cobwebs and walk the length of the locks and then walk to the village, through the fields.
Here I am at the beginning, deciding which way to go first, the weather was not as we would have liked but with walking boots and a flask of coffee and of course our picnic we decided to go to the bottom and walk up.
Having looked at the locks it must be hard work pushing the lock open to get your boat through.
The large building in the background used to be the Asylum but is now a rather large housing estate. Change of the times!
If you sit here and watch long enough you may get to see ``The Hatton Lock Monster`` We did not see it unfortunately.
Just goes to show how long this lock has been here.

Who would have thought it would have sprung a leak!!!!!!
We walked out to Hatton Village and ate our lunch at the picnic tables, freezing cold, but enjoying the usual leftovers from our Xmas lunch. Poor Santa looks stuck on the roof.
Not sure what this plant is but really liked it so thought a picture could be shared by all. Still looks like a huge blackberry to me.

So ... how long would it take the 'average' barge to travel the length of the locks? How long does it take to fill a 'lock'? I take it you didn't see one in action?! Nice blueberry!
